Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The original nine-speed automatic transmission has been replaced by a new 10-speed one in the 2023 Pilot, but the SUV remains a front-wheel-drive model with all-wheel drive offered as an option. While the upgraded V-6 engine doesn’t make the Pilot feel any faster than the previous generation model, its throttle response is enhanced, and the 10-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. On-road refinement has also been increased over the 2022 model, with more confident steering and brakes. The toughest Trailsport model demonstrated its ability to handle somewhat difficult terrain on real-world off-road trails near Breckenridge, Colorado, and again in Sedona, Arizona. Nevertheless, Honda has not produced a rock-crawling super-machine capable of tackling Moab alongside Broncos, Wranglers, and 4Runners.
